Title 17 Us Codes 501 &506
Section 501(a) identifies a copyright infringment as someone who
"violates any of the exclusive rights of the copyright owner as provided by sections
106 through 118" of the bill or who imports copies or phone records in violation
of section 602.
The principal criminal statute protecting copyrighted works is 17 U.S.C. 506(a) which
provides that "any person who infinges a copyright willfully and for purposes of commercial advantage
or private financial gain" shall be punished as provided in 18 U.S.C.
